Overview
First Aid training is the common name people use for various nationally recognised first aid courses. As first aid is nationally recognised training, courses are accredited under the Australian Qualifications Framework and are given unique numbers.
The most common first aid courses are those delivered by Dymocks Training (RTO ID 45981) – these courses are known by their current course codes:
- HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
- HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
For most people it is necessary to be trained in HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.
For people working in childcare and aged care related settings, however, it is also necessary to receive training in HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting.
The courses have different validation periods and it is important to know this. Specifically:
- HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting only require certification every 3 years

Course Outline
Provide First Aid in an education and care setting (HLTAID012)
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
This unit applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.
This unit of competency may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).
The training covers both knowledge components (what a learner will be trained to do) and competency assessment (what a learner will be required to demonstrate).
Learners will be trained to: | Learners will be required to demonstrate that they can: |
1. Respond to an emergency situation. | 1.1. Recognise and assess an emergency situation. 1.2. Ensure safety for self, bystanders and casualty. 1.3. Assess the casualty and recognise the need for first aid response. 1.4. Seek assistance from emergency services. |
2. Apply appropriate first aid procedures. | 2.1. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with the ARC guidelines. 2.2. Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles. 2.3. Ensure casualty feels safe, secure and supported. 2.4. Obtain consent from casualty where possible. 2.5. Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible. 2.6. Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions. 2.7. Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles. |
3. Communicate details of the incident. | 3.1. Accurately convey incident details to emergency services. 3.2. Report details of incident in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures. 3.3. Complete applicable workplace or site documentation, including incident report form. 3.4. Report details of incidents involving infants and children to parents or caregivers. 3.5. Follow appropriate workplace or site procedures to report serious incidents to the regulatory authority. 3.6. Maintain privacy and confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory or organisational policies. |
4. Review the incident. | 4.1. Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required. 4.2. Contribute to a review of the first aid response as required. |
Course Duration
If completing a combination of HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation with HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 a learner will need to complete approximately 6 – 8 hours of pre-reading online. The practical assessment for those units will then be conducted over an 8 hour day or three, three hour evenings.Course Delivery
The First Aid Course is delivered through a combination of online and in-person training. Pre-reading is conducted online in the learner’s own time. Practical training and assessment is conducted in-person.
On enrolment learners receive access to an online classroom consisting of learning resources and knowledge assessment. This must be completed prior to attendance at the practical, face to face training
Learners can choose to complete practical assessments either by:
- Attending a single day intensive course; or
- Attending three, 3-hour weeknight assessments

In HLTAID012 you will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to provide emergency first aid in general settings as well as education and care settings.
The time for the course varies based on the course participants and their learning needs. One thing you can be sure about is that Dymocks will never cut corners on your training. A full ‘first aid day’ in which you learn both CPR and First Aid will be between 7 – 9 hours including practical assessments. This is broken down as follows:
- HLTAID009 CPR takes 2-3 hours to complete.
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid Course takes a further 3 – 4 hours to complete.
- HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting takes a further 2 – 3 hours to complete.
There is some pre-reading and knowledge assessment that must also be completed.

Yes, the first aid Statements of Attainment we provide will be recognised wherever you go throughout Australia. Dymocks Training is a Nationally Recognised Training Organisation RTO ID 45981,
Not only will your Australia Wide First Aid certificate be accepted Australia-wide, your training will be in accordance with guidelines set by the Australian Resuscitation Council.
When you enrol you will be provided with access to Dymocks Training Learning Resources. You will need to review the learning materials and complete the associated assessment before attending the face to face training. You can complete the online material at home, in your own time.
In the practical session you will be required to demonstrate your understanding of CPR and First Aid techniques. Bring comfortable clothing and a cushion or towel for your knees if you wish.
